What Texas Districts Need to Know About STAAR Prep

State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) carry significant implications for students, educators, and school systems across the state. For students, performance on subject-specific STAAR exams remains a key requirement for high school graduation. For educators and campuses, STAAR results factor into accountability measures that influence evaluations, improvement planning, and public reporting.

District leaders navigate additional layers of pressure. Texas Independent School Districts (ISDs) may qualify for incentive funding tied to STAAR performance, while sustained low outcomes can trigger increased state oversight. Despite the high stakes, more than half of Texas students continue to score below grade level. Achievement gaps remain most pronounced among students from low-income backgrounds, emergent bilingual learners, and students receiving special education services.

  • Teachers Need Test Prep Support

These ongoing challenges—coupled with the recent STAAR redesign focusing on critical thinking and writing—make effective preparation more essential than ever for Texas ISDs. Yet many teachers find it difficult to integrate STAAR readiness into already packed schedules, especially when their classrooms include students with a range of ability levels and diverse support needs. Simply teaching the material is not enough; teachers must also ensure students are prepared for the test’s specific format and question types.

Despite the clear need for comprehensive prep resources, many teachers lack the support to properly prepare students for STAAR while maintaining a high instructional standard. While the state provides curricular guidance and practice questions, teachers are often left to develop their own test prep strategies and fit them into the broader curriculum. External solutions have been limited, with some vendors offering only practice questions or workbooks, and others providing content in just one subject area. As a result, teachers struggle to find time to teach core material while also preparing students for the exam. This gap leaves students approaching STAAR without the specialized skills and confidence needed to achieve the scores that reflect the quality of their education.

With changes to STAAR coming in the 2027–28 school year—shifting to three shorter, more frequent assessments—the need for comprehensive, targeted test prep will only grow.
