Start Early, Start Strong: 7 Back-to-School Test Prep Priorities for 2026–27

The beginning of the school year offers an important opportunity to build the skills, systems, and culture that support preparation for high-stakes tests, from the ACT® and SAT® to state-specific exams.

The goal isn’t to add more to teachers’ already-full plates, but to make readiness a purposeful part of the instruction and support already taking place.

As your school or district prepares for 2026–27, consider making these seven priorities a part of your strategy.

Test prep is most effective when it reinforces classroom instruction rather than competes with it.

At the start of the year, build a roadmap that shows not just when students will test but also how your school or district will prepare, respond, and adjust along the way. That tool can help teams plan key checkpoints before and after each assessment, from practice testing and data review to intervention and follow-up.

To further align test readiness with your instructional calendar, map the skills measured by high-stakes assessments to your existing scope and sequence. This can help teachers identify when test-relevant skills will naturally appear and where additional reinforcement may be needed.

For example, a math unit on functions connects directly to college readiness question types on the ACT or SAT, as do reading skills like inference, word meaning, and author’s purpose.

Pinpointing this alignment early also makes it easier to incorporate bell ringers, mini-lessons, and other targeted practice without sacrificing core instructional time.

  • Give Teachers the Training to Lead the Strategy

A strong readiness plan depends on educators who understand the assessment and how it connects to what they teach. While teachers should avoid simply “teaching to the test,” they should understand its format, rigor, priority skills, and common student challenges.

  • Establish an Early Baseline

Before deciding where to focus, schools need an accurate picture of where students stand. Administering a diagnostic or full-length practice test early in the year can help surface skill gaps, identify strengths, and provide a baseline for measuring growth.

To turn that information into action, look beyond overall averages. Breaking results down by skill, subject, classroom, and performance band can help educators group students strategically, set goals, identify priorities, and provide targeted support. 

Students approaching a college-readiness benchmark may need a different plan than those requiring foundational skill development.

An early diagnostic should be the beginning of a longer process. Schools also need regular checkpoints for determining whether students are improving and whether the strategy is working.
