From Data to Action: How Growth Monitoring Can Improve Assessment Readiness

  • September 29, 2026

When schools think about assessment performance, it’s easy to focus on the final result. How many students reached proficiency? How many met a college readiness benchmark? Did the campus hit its goals?

Yes, those outcomes matter. But they’re shaped by the decisions educators make long before test day. A strong assessment readiness strategy focuses on the progress students make throughout the year and gives educators the information they need to respond along the way.

Within MasteryPrep’s ALIGN Framework, Growth Monitoring is a critical part of building that year-round system. And that starts with a deliberate approach to tracking student performance over time.

  • Start With a Clear Baseline

You can’t measure growth without meeting students where they currently are. Diagnostic assessments, practice tests, and other baseline measures can help educators understand current performance before setting goals or making instructional decisions.

“If you don’t know where they’re starting, you’re not going to be able to monitor them,” said Dr. Mya Asberry, Director of Instructional Services at MasteryPrep, at a recent webinar. “You’re not going to be able to create a goal, and you’re not going to be able to determine where they would likely finish.”

Baseline data provides a starting point, but the value comes from what educators do next.

Teams can use this information to:

  • Identify areas of strength
  • Uncover unfinished learning
  • Group students according to need
  • Set short-term growth targets
  • Determine where instructional resources should be focused
  • Set Goals for the Next Milestone

Year-end goals provide direction, but they can feel distant for both educators and students.

Growth monitoring becomes more actionable when schools break those large goals into shorter checkpoints. Instead of asking only where a student needs to be by spring, ask where that student should be at the next benchmark, practice assessment, or progress-monitoring window.

As Asberry explained, the target should be clear: “This is where they are now, this is where I want to see them in six weeks. Not ‘this is where I want to see them at the end of the year.’ This is where I want to see them on the next assessment.”

Shorter-term goals give teachers opportunities to adjust before small gaps become larger ones. This approach also makes progress more visible to students. Moving toward a near-term target can feel more attainable.

  • Use Data to Differentiate Instruction

Growth monitoring shouldn’t mean that a spreadsheet simply gets updated every few weeks and rarely influences instruction. The data should help answer a more important question: What does this student need?

Differentiating instruction may entail:

  • Regrouping students according to current performance
  • Modifying the complexity of an assignment
  • Providing different levels of scaffolding
  • Targeting a specific skill through small-group instruction

Students don’t all begin at the same point, so giving every learner identical practice may not produce the growth schools are looking for. Asberry recommends keeping differentiation manageable for teachers rather than creating an excessive number of instructional groups. Students can be grouped into broader performance bands and moved as their needs change.

The groups themselves should never become permanent labels. Their purpose is to help teachers respond to the data they have today. As students demonstrate growth, their instructional needs should evolve with them.

  • Track More Than Overall Scores

A single score can tell educators whether performance has changed. But it doesn’t always explain why.

Effective growth monitoring goes deeper. Schools may want to examine performance at the classroom, student, skill, standard, and individual-question levels, which can help teachers identify deeper patterns.

A student’s overall score may remain relatively stable while performance improves significantly in one skill area. Another student may appear to be progressing overall while repeatedly struggling with a specific standard.

  • Reassess, Adjust, and Repeat

Growth monitoring is not a one-time event. After teachers provide targeted instruction or intervention, students need another opportunity to demonstrate whether it worked. That might come through an exit ticket, a brief formative assessment, another practice activity, or a scheduled benchmark.

Then, the process becomes cyclical:

  • Establish a baseline
  • Set a goal
  • Provide targeted instruction
  • Check progress
  • Adjust again
  • Make Growth Visible to Students

A student doesn’t need to wait until the final assessment to hear their work is paying off. Recognizing smaller milestones can provide meaningful feedback and reinforce the habits that contributed to improvement.

After all, strong outcomes rarely come from one intervention or one final push before test day. They’re built through a series of informed decisions throughout the school year.

With that in mind, schools can create a clearer path from where each student begins to where they need to go.
