  • How MasteryPrep Boot Camps Work

MasteryPrep Boot Camps are high-impact, half-day workshops designed to build student confidence, strengthen essential skills, and improve test-day performance. Led by MasteryPrep-trained expert instructors, Boot Camps deliver engaging, strategy-driven instruction during or after school hours or on weekends.

Events can be held in person or virtually and are designed to keep students actively engaged from beginning to end.

Districts across the country are increasingly turning to our Boot Camps for EOC to help students succeed on state tests tied to district accountability.

MasteryPrep currently offers EOC Boot Camps for:

  • STAAR (Texas): Algebra I, English I, English II, U.S. History
  • NC EOC (North Carolina): Math 1, English II
  • MAAP (Mississippi): Algebra I
  • LEAP (Louisiana): Algebra I, Biology, Civics, English I, English II, Geometry, U.S. History

Additional state offerings are in development and will allow more districts to access targeted, standards-aligned support to reach accountability goals.

Each Boot Camp is customized to the assessment and subject area and typically includes:

  • Calculator strategies when calculators are permitted

  • Standards-aligned questions throughout

“There is no such thing as a bad test-taker,” says MasteryPrep Founder and CEO Craig Gehring. “A bad test-taker is just a student who has not yet learned the critical thinking skills and time management skills that they need to be a good test-taker.”

Schools implementing Boot Camps for state assessments have seen encouraging results. In a MasteryPrep analysis comparing 2022 and 2023 STAAR results among schools and districts that implemented Boot Camps:

  • 87.5% saw both a decrease in students scoring Did Not Meet and an increase in students scoring Approaches.
  • 68.8% saw increases in the percentage of students scoring Meets or higher, with an average gain of 5.7%.

After holding Boot Camps for STAAR English I and II, Aubrey ISD saw a 38.49% mean reduction in the percentage of students scoring Did Not Meet, with average gains of 10.5 percentage points at Approaches and 3.5 points at Meets. English I showed the highest growth, with 14-point increases at both Approaches and Meets. These results reflect what many educators observe firsthand: targeted preparation can help more students demonstrate what they know.

“We started hosting Math 1 and English II [NC EOC] Boot Camps for the first time,” said Mary Cothren, former GEAR UP Coordinator at Clay County Schools in North Carolina. “The teachers and the students gave high reviews on it, so that will be something that we continue to do in the coming years.”

“Once they’ve completed the Boot Camp, they know how to take the mini-tests that are included in the workbooks and continue to work through that,” Cothren adds. “The teachers sit in on the Boot Camp as well and are able to assess which areas the students didn’t do so well in or what questions arose.”
