It Takes a Village: Building Shared Ownership Around Assessment Readiness

For high-stakes assessments like the ACT, SAT, and state EOCs, preparation is often most effective when responsibility is shared across districts, schools, classrooms, and families. 

As Dr. Mya Asberry, Director of Instructional Services, said during MasteryPrep’s recent back-to-school webinar, “Everybody owns this—not just the principal, not just the chief academic officer, and not just the superintendent.” Student readiness depends partly on decisions made at every level of the school community. 

Creating that sense of shared ownership starts with giving each group a meaningful role in the process. When responsibility is distributed, success becomes less dependent on isolated initiatives or last-minute preparation and more integrated into the work happening throughout the year.

  • Set the Foundation for Shared Ownership

Shared ownership doesn’t mean every stakeholder has the same role. Clear leadership at the outset can give schools a common direction while still leaving room for flexibility in implementation.

District leaders can:

  • Establish clear assessment priorities
  • Align assessment goals with broader instructional goals
  • Ensure schools have the time, resources, and structures needed to implement the strategy
  • Create consistent expectations across schools
  • Give Educators a Voice in the Plan

While some parts of an assessment plan may be determined at the district level, including testing dates, required exams, and broader academic priorities, not every element of the strategy needs to be finalized before teachers and instructional leaders have a voice in how it will work in practice.

Their perspective can help ensure the strategy reflects classroom realities and student needs.

Educator input can shape:

  • When and how assessment data is reviewed
  • Which instructional gaps need additional attention
  • Where intervention or additional support may be needed
  • How test preparation fits into existing instruction
  • How student progress is monitored throughout the year

“Don’t come to the table with everything already sketched out,” Dr. Asberry said.

Educators are closest to students’ day-to-day learning. Giving them a voice not only provides a valuable perspective but can also help create greater alignment across the community. Rather than presenting test prep as another initiative educators are expected to implement, leaders can position it as a shared effort they can help shape.

  • Make Students Active Participants

Shared ownership should also extend to students, who are more likely to engage meaningfully with preparation when they understand what they are working toward and how each step connects to their progress. Dr. Asberry encouraged teachers to have direct conversations with students about the plan: “This is why we’re doing this, this is how we’re doing this, and this is how we intend to get you from point A to point B this year.”

That context matters. Practice tests, targeted instruction, and intervention can feel disconnected when students don’t understand how each piece supports their learning. Once students see how preparation connects to their broader goals, they can take a more active role in their own assessment readiness.

Students can take ownership by:

  • Reviewing and reflecting on their assessment data
  • Identifying areas for improvement
  • Setting goals for growth
  • Tracking progress over time
  • Asking for help when they need additional support
  • Recognizing and celebrating progress
  • Bring Families Into the Conversation

Extending the assessment readiness strategy beyond the classroom means bringing families into the conversation. Parents and caregivers can be valuable partners when schools give them clear information about the assessment process and meaningful ways to support students. 

“Don’t leave families out,” Asberry said. “They want to know as well what you’re doing to try to help their students.”

Families should know:

  • Key assessment dates, timelines, and expectations
  • How test preparation fits into regular instruction
  • What skills or content areas students are working to strengthen
  • What school-provided tools and resources are available
  • How families can support preparation at home
  • Where to go with questions about testing, accommodations, or other logistics

Information sessions, school meetings, emails, and other outreach can help answer common questions and clarify expectations. The goal is not to make families responsible for delivering test preparation, but to help them understand and reinforce the work already happening at school.

Together, these roles create the shared commitment Dr. Asberry described: “It truly takes a village. Assessment is owned by everyone.”

  • The ALIGN Framework: Start With One Change

Building shared ownership is one piece of a broader test prep strategy. Dr. Asberry’s ALIGN framework is designed to help school and district leaders think more holistically about how planning, instruction, data, and communication work together throughout the year.

Rather than trying to change every element at once, Dr. Asberry encourages leaders to identify one area of the framework where they can make an immediate improvement.

For some schools, that may mean strengthening shared ownership across the school community. For others, it may mean building an assessment roadmap, refining instructional responses to data, or improving how student growth is monitored throughout the year. Either way, small, intentional changes can help build a more coordinated and sustainable approach to assessment readiness.
